The SNL gym bit: one word, a whole routine

How the backlash to Shane Gillis's SNL monologue read an entire routine through a single offensive word.

The social-media backlash to Shane Gillis's SNL monologue illustrates a recurring flaw in how we discuss provocative comedy: an offensive word is isolated from its context, and the entire routine is interpreted through that single word.

What Shane Gillis actually said: the setup

Gillis opens the bit by saying, "I haven't been to the gym in so long. I didn't know women just dressed like whores now." Taken literally and in isolation, it sounds like a sweeping judgment about women who exercise. The monologue frames the speaker first. He opens by saying he has hit "fat rock bottom," tells a story about a disastrous hike, and describes the public gym as a nightmare for "a fat guy," surrounded by "the hottest gay guys you've ever seen." Earlier in the same monologue, he also describes Theo Von telling him he looks like "a gas station egg." He enters the premise as an insecure, out-of-shape guy, not a moral authority. The line is followed by a crude description of neon shorts whose wrinkles "go like around the cheeks," and only then does the punchline arrive. The crude opening line is the setup. Treating it as the routine's thesis misreads how the joke is built, because the meaning of the bit depends on where it goes next.

The punchline changes the subject

Right after the description of the shorts, the punchline turns away from the word and toward a different observation:

"And don't look. You're not allowed to look. For real, don't look, because they are filming. I'm in the background of like ten TikToks right now."

The joke lands on a contradiction in gym culture, which we would paraphrase as "look at me, but don't look at me." The target is that mixed message and the filming that comes with it, not the people the opening word described.

Performative rationalizations and an ironic backlash

The observation is not new. Gym-callout creators such as Joey Swoll have built a genre around this dynamic, and Gillis's own show Tires dramatized it. A fair discussion of it rests on three baseline distinctions:

Much of the backlash ignored these distinctions. Widely shared posts reduced the routine to its setup ("Women dress like whores in the gym now") and dropped the punchline. Critics then answered points the routine never made, such as defending tight gym clothing as functional athletic wear ("compression workout clothes have an actual athletic function"), when the bit is not demanding a dress code. It mocks the contradiction between conspicuous gym clothing, constant filming, and the rule that bystanders must not look.

The backlash was also ironic. Some gym-goers filmed themselves with captions such as "Found out I'm a whore today," and at least one widely shared clip drew comments about the men visible in its background, echoing the punchline.

Crude language, comedic compression, and context collapse

Comedy compresses. A crude word can stand in for a longer, more careful idea, and that compression is part of how stand-up works. Once a clip or quote circulates without its setup and payoff, the compression becomes the whole message. That is context collapse: the word survives, the context does not.

Claims vs. what the routine says

ClaimThe full context
The routine is defined by its offensive opening word.The word is the setup; the punchline about filming carries the point.
Tight gym clothing is functional athletic wear.The bit describes the clothing but demands no dress code; its target is the clash between being filmed and being told not to look.
"Women dress like whores in the gym now" (as widely shared).Quoting only the setup drops the punchline about filming.
The joke proves women dress like whores / should dress modestly.A literal reading of the setup, adopted approvingly. The punchline is about cameras and attention policing; the bit never tells anyone how to dress.

The other misreading: taking the setup as a mandate

Critics weren't the only ones who stopped at the setup. Another group, including openly anti-feminist and religious-traditionalist accounts, heard "women dress like whores" as an endorsement. They used the clip to call women in gym wear sluts and whores, and to demand modesty, at the gym and beyond. Some went further and mocked fat women for joining the protest videos.

This makes the same error as the outrage, from the opposite side. It treats the setup as the thesis and ignores the punchline, which is about cameras and attention policing, not about what women should wear. The bit never told anyone how to dress. Its persona is a self-mocking, out-of-shape guy, not a moral authority. Using it to degrade women is not "getting the joke"; it is the literal reading the critics feared, adopted approvingly.

We do not agree with the outrage, and we do not agree with this either. Both camps amputated the punchline: one to condemn the joke, the other to weaponize it. The baseline distinctions above (clothing is not motivation, looking is not staring, wanting to look good is not consent to mistreatment) apply equally here.

The broader point

A joke's language can be offensive, its caricature imperfect, and its underlying observation still valid. Recognizing why a word is offensive shouldn't prevent us from understanding, discussing, or evaluating the point that follows.

And the misreading cut both ways: the punchline was lost on those who condemned the joke and on those who embraced it.

So Shane Gillis on SNL said: “Women dress like whores in the gym now” Referring to wearing nothing but compression shorts and a sports bra. To teach him a lesson thousands of women are making social media posts of themselves in compression shorts and a bra talking about him. Basically giving him the largest “sex sells” psyop media campaign ever. For free. Really taught him a lesson.

Shane Gillis is painfully unfunny. Didn’t laugh at the Kevin Hart roast, and I’m still waiting for a punchline. Calling women “whores” at the gym isn’t edgy comedy. It’s lazy misogyny dressed up as humor. Being offensive is easy. Being funny actually requires talent. https://t.co/1374lWUuiL

My feed is inundated this morning with Shane Gillis' misogynistic spiel on SNL. Very inappropriate. A man shouldn't be telling women what to wear at a gym or judging them for what they wear. They probably don't have this problem at gyms in Islamic countries. https://t.co/yMM9yxnkFe

Shane Gillis bombs #SNL monologue with cheap shots at women: “Also, I haven’t been to the gym in so long I didn’t know women just dress like wh*res now? Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe [it]. Have you seen it? I’ve seen it. You’ve seen the shorts? “calling women such horrific names … isn’t a punchline” i love this discourse bc it legitimately feels like nobody actually watched the monologue? You’re right, it isn’t the punchline. the punchline was shane making fun of the behavior and jokin abt looking like a creep. the entire point is that he invalidates his own point by joking he’s in 10 of the gym tiktok’s looking like this absolute monster lol, it’s a through line between the hiking story and the gym, and transitions into why the sauna story happened. acting like his small tangent about women in the gym is some kind of advocation of misogyny, rape culture, whatever tf is a horrible misread from the type of people who constantly brag about being so media literate and intelligent. did the people literally saying shane’s comments are the reason men rape even watch this? it genuinely confuses me

@emilysavesusa They heard the word whores and immediately got on the defensive. But that equates to, "Im a woman, I go the gym, Shane Gillis just called a whore😡". That line was just the setup, the joke was he's the creep getting caught starring in the background of their Tik Tok videos.

Fair analysis2

@mjarboX2026-10-12

Watching the backlash to Shane Gillis’ SNL monologue is kind of hilarious because people are doing the exact same thing that helped make him huge in the first place. Gillis was hired by SNL in 2019 and fired just days later after old podcast clips resurfaced. Instead of disappearing, his career exploded. Netflix specials, TIRES, arena shows, and now he’s gone back and hosted SNL three separate times. So when Gillis goes on SNL and does a very Shane Gillis monologue, jokes about women at the gym, gay dudes, Hitler, and whatever else, what exactly did everyone think they were getting? Now Dan Levy and other celebrities are publicly condemning him, the headlines are multiplying, and suddenly Gillis owns another news cycle. You don’t have to like the guy. You don’t have to like the jokes. But Shane Gillis has built a career partially on people loudly insisting Shane Gillis shouldn’t have a career. And every time people do this, they hand him more attention, more fans, and probably another house. Kudos, morons.

Backlash repeats 2019 dynamic that boosted him

@ElonsBlueBirdX2026-10-15

I’m on the other side of the fence on this Shane Gillis/whore gym thing. Let women dress anyway they want to in the gym. I am all for celebrating fitness, feeling good about yourself, your healthy body and getting back to the Sydney Sweeney look versus the Nike, woke, out of shape, unhealthy message that we’ve had to endure for the last several years. Now, if those same women get upset because what they wear attracts attention, I would cry foul. But otherwise, if they want to show off their hard work and their journey into fitness by wearing tight clothes and filming themselves… it’s a whole lot better than having to pretend that type 2 diabetes is sexy.

Self-described other side: let women dress how they want

Modesty-shaming15

@seanmdavX2026-10-14

The Shane Gillis gym discourse is almost as funny as his jokes themselves, which were great. Everyone knows he's correct. The rampant gym skankery bothers everyone. Everyone. Except for two groups of people: gym hoes and skeevy gym bros. The gym hoes are desperate for attention. So desperate it's genuinely sad. But they only want positive attention, and only the right amount. What is the right amount? It depends. If the gym hoes think you are attractive, you are allowed to ogle. But if they think you're gross, you're only allowed to look at them if they're filming and need someone to make an example of in their stupid TikToks where they pretend they're not desperate for the attention they claim to hate. What no one is ever allowed to do is give them negative attention. You are not allowed to notice them and tell them to cover up. That's even worse than being ugly and ogling. Shaming a gym hoe for her poor choices is a cardinal sin. If doubt me, look no further than the Jane Hoe scandal at Cornell. You are also not allowed to react with a jump scare when you accidentally get a glimpse of a surgically altered gym hoe's gigantic balloon lips that make her look she just get stung by an entire hive of bees. They don't like that at all. Definitely do not ask them if they need some Benadryl or an epipen. They hate that. Now, to the skeevy gym bros. Please stop ogling and encouraging the gym hoes. You are the gym equivalent of the tourist who keeps feeding the pigeons, so that the pigeons keep coming back and crapping on everything and begging for attention so they can get food. And I don't care how hungry you are, you don't want that filthy pigeon in your house. Do not try to get its attention and bring it home. Who knows what kind of diseases that filthy gym ho—I mean pigeon, since this is just a metaphor—who knows where that disgusting pigeon with low self-esteem has been. We all know this is true. The gym hoes and the skeevy gym hoes know it's true. That's why they're mad at Shane Gillis. Not because he was wrong, but because he was right.

I can’t believe people are mad at Shane Gillis over this joke. I’ve noticed that it’s mainly simps and the gym whores he’s speaking of that are mad. And he’s 100% right. Women wear tight leggings that are styled to bunch up into the crack of their ass. Most of them also tuck the backs of their shirts into their sports bra just to make sure you see it. Then have the nerve to get mad when you notice it. They upload tiktoks calling men predators and shit. Women whore up everything they do. Take Halloween for instance, a kids holiday. It's not enough for a woman to dress up as a scary vampire or Jessie from Toy Story. They have to be a 'slutty nurse' or a 'sexy cop' complete with short skirts and cleavage out for all the kids to see. Women can't even upload videos to social media without making sure you see their ass for at least 7 seconds. Shane Gillis is spot on and women hate having a mirror up to their face.

Bra and panties 👙 that’s it. It has gotten out of hand. I thought I’d post a picture to prove my point but will refer you to comedian Shane Gillis’ SNL joke on the matter. While he was joking there’s so much truth. The gym is for working out 🏋️‍♀️ not a strip club. Yes, men and women will stare if you have a great bodybuilding, the attire (or lack of) for some women is "ova" the top. Then they get an attitude if looked at. Cover up! What happened to modesty. Mainly liberal women who support Mamdani and Abdul Sayed dress this way. Lol! Guess what their sharia law will put you in a hijab 🧕.

I agree with Shane Gillis. Women at the gym dress like whores and equally are attention whores just as much. I have gone to the gym six days a week, average for 25+ years, and I have seen the downward spiral trend. Women are basically virtually naked and wearing wallpaper around their private parts.
